Voices of Africa latest: Soweto website wins media award

All the latest mobile phone reports available, including www.sowetouprisings.com which created a google mashup to trace the route of students uprising and the routes of the police.

A simple mashup where each marker along the route can display photos and text to ‘tell the story’ and others can leave comments - which keeps the story living on.

The mobile report is with Ismail Farouk who helped create the website and cautions that the website shows how students protested against an oppressive education system but that now there is not so much the oppression - but the lack of regular digital connectivity such as internet can still create barriers to education.

However, just watching the original Voices of Africa video where they show one of the reporters uploading a mobile video in seconds, in what seems to be the unlikeliest of places, shows that again as elsewhere, mobile demand is pushing forward digital connectivity, where previously would not have been thought possible for years.
